Warriors to Summits 2016 is a series of three backcountry expeditions for veterans with disabilities. Two teams of veterans from all eras and with a range of disabilities will be selected to participate in Expedition I, the Gila Wilderness of New Mexico or Expedition II, the Presidential Range of New Hampshire. Participants who complete Expeditions I and II, and alumni from Warriors to Summits 2014 and 2015 teams will have the opportunity to apply to take part in Expedition III, an epic journey that targets multiple summits in the San Juan Mountain Range of Colorado. Alumni not chosen for Expedition III will transition into No Barriers Warriors Meaningful Engagement program to continue their quest to grow and live a No Barriers Life.
This series of expeditions will provide a grueling yet rewarding mental and physical challenge to all the veterans who have a desire to make a change in their life. Explore each expedition’s details and specific dates below.

Your expedition begins at the airport in El Paso, Texas where you will be greeted by your expedition leaders and new teammates. Your first day will be focused on prepping for the challenges ahead and building immediate bonds with your fellow veterans. You will be provided all the gear and food you need for the expedition ahead. Your first days on the trail will be spent exploring the beautiful slot canyons of the Gila River navigating multiple river crossings. Over the course of five days, your team will work together to navigate 37 miles through the backcountry maze, including a ascent of Hells Hole Canyon, exploring the Gila Cliff Dwellings, and taking a dip in an awesome back country hot spring – recovering from the miles. Throughout the expedition, you will carry your personal gear and some group gear, and will bond with your cook group as you prepare backcountry masterpieces at camp to fuel the next day’s mileage. Throughout the experience, your leaders will be there to facilitate our No Barriers curriculum and remind you that what’s within you is stronger than what’s in your way. After the expedition, alumni are welcomed into the No Barriers family for ongoing support from our community and the possibility to be eligible for future opportunities, including Expedition III: San Juan Range.

Whitney team, 2015 Team Gannett Peak, the 2016 Wind River Range Team, and the 2016 Presidential Range Team. After careful selection for this unique expedition, the newly formed team will meet for the first time at Saint Mary’s Glacier in Colorado on August 19-23. This training will be focused on forming new bonds and preparing for the demanding challenge ahead in the San Juans. Saint Mary’s Glacier is a permanent snowfield below James Peak (13,294 ft). The team will spend multiple days above 10,000 feet working through the No Barriers curriculum and building additional mountain skills and endurance.
Expedition III begins at the Denver airport, where the team and expedition leaders meet before heading west and gearing up for the epic adventure ahead. This expedition includes traveling approximately 30 miles over the course of 8 days, all surrounded by the towering peaks and valleys of the San Juan Mountain Range. The team will take on the challenge of attempting multiple summits, traveling at altitude and upwards above 14,000 feet. The team will experience long, grueling days on the trail. They will lean on each other, and harness their mental and physical grit to move through the beautiful and rewarding Colorado wilderness. Along the way, they will build a new rope team of veterans and recommit to the No Barriers Life.
