Benjamin “Benny” Sanchez
Branch of Service: United States Army
Currently Residing In: El Paso, TX
My name is SSG (ret). Benjamin Sanchez Jr. and I was born in Juarez, Mexico. At the age of five my parents decided to move to El Paso, Texas where my father became a United States citizen after proudly serving in the Korean Conflict years before. Growing up was difficult; I grew up on the poor side of town and was living from paycheck to paycheck trying to support my family. My wife Laura had to hold two jobs and still managed to find time to go to school and take care of our family. That is when I decided to join the U.S Army.
I was in Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, on September 11th, 2001 and was quickly stationed to Fort Benning, Georgia with the famous Third Infantry Division. Our division quickly deployed for Operation Desert Spring, Operation Iraqi Freedom I, and Operation Iraqi Freedom III. After returning home I joined the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team and deployed to the Korengal Valley in Afghanistan for 15 months and on to the Wardak Province for another 12.
By deployment number five I was not doing so well to say the least. Insomnia started becoming like that unwanted neighbor you never want to see. Migraines, back pain, and a long list of other ailments plagued me, but with help from the VA I slowly started getting better. The Army has been a long journey but at the same time a wonderful experience. I have made longtime friends and realize that with dedication and hard work it was well worth it.
