Avis joined the Army reserves in 1999, and was activated in 2002. As a teacher and coach, she had to leave on two days notice in the middle of a a school year and basketball season. Her MOS was 54B, which is a Nuclear Biological Chemical Specialist. She was activated with the 244th Combat Engineers, under the 4th ID. In 2003, Avis’ unit was sent to Iraq, where they spent one year. While in Iraq, she spent the first six months as a gunner on a convoy crew, and the last six months as a driver on a convoy crew. While in Iraq, she also met her husband Bret, who also belonged to the 244th Combat Engineers.
Avis has been a middle school science teacher in Strasburg, Colorado for 16 years. She has three sons, Andrew, 15, Thomas, 10, and Joseph, 5. She is married to Bret, an Army Ranger who she met while serving in Iraq in 2003.
Avis joined the Warriors to Summits team to help herself and others with the baggage of war; she feels that everyone who goes to war comes home with baggage. At points in her life this baggage has been really heavy, but with the help of others, Avis has learned how to keep moving forward. She knows this expedition is a great opportunity to help herself keep moving on, and possibly help someone else.
